Holidays are supposed to help us relax and forget about any stresses we left at home so it's hugely important that we stay healthy while we're away in order to make the most of the trip. There are a number of precautions you can take to ensure that falling ill is unlikely during your holiday, such as:

Get protected

Visit your GP and ask if they advise any vaccinations for people visiting the country you're travelling to. This is hugely important as immunisation can prevent the contraction of life threatening diseases - so even if you're afraid of needles it's time to pluck up some courage and take the necessary precautions.

Take supplies

It's often a good idea to pack a small first aid kit to take away with you in case of minor injuries. Be sure to include painkillers and diarrhoea tablets. Depending on your destination you may also want to pack plenty of bottled water for consumption over there if there's a chance of suffering from water-borne diseases.

Protect against the sun

If you're heading to sunny climes make sure you're well prepared. Stock up on high factor sunscreen to see you through until the end of your holiday and be sure to pack sunglasses and a hat. Sunstroke is ready and waiting to ruin your trip so do everything you can to avoid it.

Look after pre-existing conditions

If you suffer from a pre-existing medical condition then make sure you're well prepared for your holiday. Consult your GP about any concerns you have about travelling with the condition and make sure you take enough prescription medicine with you to last the time you're away - and take extra just in case your flights are delayed.

Take no chances

Even a well planned holiday can take an unexpected turn from time to time so be sure to take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy to suit your specific needs. If you have a pre-existing medical condition consider going with a specialist travel medical insurance provider and fully disclose your condition when applying for cover.

Such simple steps can make the difference between a happy holiday and a trip to forget, so make sure you're well prepared for your well-deserved break.
